Repose is an intricate ink pen drawing of the night sky with cherry blossom branches circularly encompassing it. This drawing reflects essential values such as gratitude, joy, curiosity, and peace, which are conceivable only when we pause in our busy lives. The Cherry blossom symbolizes nostalgia and memory for me as I grew up walking under the cherry blossom trees by the river in Japan. Repose reflects my favorite moments and motifs: looking up at the sky with cherry blossom trees framing it.
I draw the night sky to suggest hope and the miracle of life, which connects afar to the universe. When I first saw the Taos sky illuminated with stars near the Rio Grande, it took my breath away. I felt lost in the dark and became overwhelmed with a sense of awe and wonder. Luchita Hurtado said, “Taos seemed closer to the sky.” I can relate to the feeling. When I lived near Rio Grande, I spent many nights under the sky illuminated with stars. There were so many that it was sometimes challenging to find the constellations. I went back inside to draw the constellations that were visible each night. That tradition continues today. When I draw the night sky, I draw the constellations from the month I draw.
